Gas Price Update- 4/29/2008

I have been trying hard to figure out ways to do something, anything, on gas prices. That is why I decided to  become a co-sponsor on H.R. 5473, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension and Consumer Protection Act. The bill is an attempt to force the President to stop diverting oil to the strategic Petroleum Reserve and move it straight to the market which will bring down the price of gas. While we try everything we can here in Washington, I know that you struggle every day back home with the realities of rising gas prices, rising food prices, rising heating and electricity bills, without seeing your wages rise the same way. One of the small things I can do  to help, right now,  is help you make some informed consumer choices. Thats why I've decided to post gas prices from around the district here on my website. These prices represent the lowest prices over the last 24 hour period in our community according to gasbuddy.com.

It may be of interest to you to know that I paid the equivalent of $8.21 for a gallon of unleaded regular gas this morning in London, UK (1 liter, £1.10).

Thank you for your efforts, but I think that the best thing we can do now is begin development of alternative sources of energy, some eco-industrial sites in our brownfields and start supporting public transportation in any way possible.

Congressman Ryan,

Thanks for posting that helpful gas table. Its hard for me knowing that the gas prices in Youngstown are higher than they are in Columbus (where I go to school) because I know that times are tighter in Youngstown. I wish that the presidential candidates would actually come up with a plan to combat these gas prices instead of just giving a generalized plan to get elected. I'm hoping that the ''undecided'' voters see the problem with Clinton and McCain's Summer Gas Holiday (http://www.reason.org/outofcontrol/archives/2008/04/mccains_gas_tax.html). Americans need to start looking for short-term solutions to long-term problems. I think the market may drive the price of gas down, but the oil industry is too intertwined with government oversight for that to happen.

Also, I read your post regarding the increase in Pell grants. Good job! I had one question though. I was fortunate enough to have my parents help me throughout undergrad with the agreement that if I chose to go to law school (which I am) I would pay for it on my own. This pretty much means that I am not eligible for a Pell grant, even when I apply to FAFSA as an independent. I am not naive and realize that the money should definitely go towards students who need it the most. Are there any grants available for students who are paying for graduate school on their own, even if their parents are not in a lower income bracket?

Thanks!

Hi Congressman Ryan! I am a Youngstown native, and moved to Cincinnati from Niles in 2001. This is my first visit to your website, and I think it's smart of you to provide people with the knowledge of immediate actions they can take with regard to the gas prices.

I also am happy to see that my hometown area has a representative that is pro-green energy. This really is the way to go. I've suggested in a letter to Governor Strickland that a skill survey be conducted in the Youngstown/Warren area because we still have a lot of knowledgeable steelworkers in that area, and there is no reason that Youngstown couldn't take on the manufacturing of steel and parts for windmills and solar panels.

I worry about Youngstown, and hope that you really can lead the district's residents into taking action. The voter's believe in you, now you need to make them believe in themselves. Go Youngstown!!!

Why are you only posting gas prices for Mahoning County when you also represent those of us here in western Portage County? Have you forgot about us? Although gas only costs about $3.77 per gallon today (05-21-08) in Youngstown area, you might be interested to know that your constituents in Rootstown and Kent are today paying $3.999 for gas. Oh well, I'm not rich but I guess I can afford it if everybody else in this country can!
